    Something stinks under laundry sink!
Hello! We have a nasty odor coming from the laundry sink cabinet area. I wonder if it is because it is seldom used allowing sewage smells in? Also there is a plumbing part in there I've never seen. (Though it could be common.) I have searched online through plumbing parts and haven't yet found it. Hopefully I've correctly attached the picture of this part.

Does anyone have ideas why it stinks and more importantly how I can fix it?

    Thanks!

That is an AAV vent. The smell may be coming from that. Replace it. Can get at home depot.

Be sure to keep water in trap.

    Good luck

Creahands gave you good advise: Keep traps wet ( meaning: run water in the sink couple times a week ) and replace the AAV vent. It is very possible it is not working properly.

Let us know how you did... Good Luck... Milo

Chuck nailed it. You have a AAV,( Air Admittance Vent). Run a tub full of water and let it drain while checking the AAV. There should be no odor or any air coming out of the vent as it drains. If it does then replace the AAV. Good luck, Tom

Thanks to all. I will replace and will use the sink a few times a week. Sad to say we've had the house 15 years and never noticed the AAV before.
