    Long Broken Tooth
Approximately two years ago half of my upper left wisdom tooth broke off at a ninety degree angle to the gum line. I suffered no pain or discomfort. I cannot be sure as to the cause of the break. Many months later, the other half fell off, leaving a complete, 180 degree break of the tooth at the gum line. Since then most of the surface has turned black, but has only recently begun to cause notable discomfort and only when directly prompted by certain foods or direct pressure.

I'm here to inquire about the procedure that this would likely call for; being a lower income college student, I'm also deeply concerned about the cost to treat this.

Wisdom tooth broke at the gum line. Treatment? Costs?

If it's a wisdom tooth and is broken at the gumline the best treatment is to have the roots removed.
As for cost, no idea, sorry. You would be best to phone around for an estimate. I'd ask for the fee on a complicated extraction. Your situation may not be complicated but it is better to be quoted more than what it might cost than to go in, have it removed and not be prepared for the bill.

If the tooth is tender to pressure, you may have an infection in the nerve and should deal with it as soon as you can.

    Good luck!

I agree with Flossie- since you're having discomfort now, it sounds like there may be an infection present. Get to a dentist right away so you can get an antibiotic to clear up the infection.

Check with local dental schools, or your health dept to see if you can get the extraction done cheaper than seeing a private dentist. Some may work out a payment plan or may even offer a sliding fee scale. Doesn't hurt to ask!

Don't wait any longer to get the infection checked because it can lead to a whole different set of very serious health problems.

    Hi!

I would also say the same.. wisdom teeth do mainly only cause problems after a certain period, most of the people have to get rid of them in order they don't effect the other teeth in a negative kind of way.. But be prepared, pulling out a wisdom tooth is really not funny, the pain in your jaw won't disappear within a couple of days, takes normally 5 - 14 days.. So, good luck!

Thanks for the feedback, you guys. I didn't really consider that the new pain could be the result of an infection.
