Can I tile over existing ceramic tile?
I have two rather small bathrooms which have mud set 1x1 porcelin tile floors. The house was built in 1972 and these are original floors, in excellent condition. There are no loose tiles or any cracks. I used a 4 ft level to check the level in several directions and the worst case is 1//8 inch in the length of the level. The existing thresholds are marble and would be flush with the new tile surface.

I am planning to upgrade these floors using larger tile.

    Here are my questions:

    1. Can I lay the new tile over the properly cleaned existing tile?
    2. What kind of mastic should I use?
    3. what depth of notched trowel should I use?
    4. Can I use 12x12 tile?
    5. Any other pointers would be appreciated.

    Thanks:

I've seen it done, but I would never do it. The tiles won't adhere properly to the floor, and if you set anything on it, they can be knocked out.

It's a lot of work to remove tile floor, but I think it's worth it.
