We are hanging a chandelier - the ceiling is not suitable therefore we will be constructing a frame which will go up both walls and across the top but not be attached to the ceiling - the top section will be 5.6m in length. The chandelier will be glass and stainless 316 and weigh a max of 100kgs. What does the width of the steel cross section need to be in order to hold this weight.

Structually, it matter what is the shape and material of the crossmember. Since this probably needs to be astheticallly pleasing and a flat bar just isn't going to do it.

Some shapes are "I beam", "angle" and square.

You might be looking at an "I beam". The bam probably would have to be shipped by truck. I was initially thinging about a square aluminum tube, but I think that won't work.

I've done these calcs, but I'm rusty.
