    Future Debt worth it
So basically, I am young, 19 in 2 months and my parents still have financial control over my life.
My first year of college was the worst experience since high school, and those are not my fondest memories.
I have a medical condition with exacerbated anxiety and depression overlay, and all I am trying to do is be happy. I am trying to tranfer to Ohio to be with my boyfriend who I have shared a year's worth of a long distance relationship. It has not been fun, easy or pleasant. We as a couple have been through some dark times together and as individuals. It is only together we're full of hope and happiness.
To cut a long story short, my parents will not co-sign my loan so that I can go to the University (I am out-of state, so tuition is more than they can pay for)

I feel like a child, because they are controlling my happiness and my future that I have been working for, and also feel like an unestablished "adult".

I'm supposedly the bad guy in this scenario :( Please help. What would you do?

Looking back and wishing that I had the education to be more financially stable in these times, I'd listen to your parents and go to the school that they can afford to pay for. You're lucky that you're parents are helping you at all. A lot of people aren't that lucky. I understand that might not be where you'll be happiest. But in the long run you'll know that you made the right decision.

My college freshman year was the pits, but things improved as I got to know people and the college routine. I agree with the above answer -- you are still young enough to be under your parents' "umbrella" and will need their financial help.

If you want to hear it from the university's pov, call the financial aid office and talk with someone about how you could go to school there and what kind of loans would you need. They might not accept you without your parents' backing, but there's only one way to find out.

And if you were able to attend this university and things didn't work out with your boyfriend, what then?

Go where you can afford to go... the boyfriend will be still be around if things are meant to work out between you.

Or see about getting some loans on your own... have you applied for any scholarships?? What about working full time and going to school part-time... that would be another way that you could finance it on your own. Perhaps your parents would be in agreement of contributing a specific amount and you have to figure out a way to come up with the rest.

Your parents should not even think about putting themselves into greater debt for your education than they can comfortably afford.

You have your whole working career to pay off student loans, they are likely at a stage where they should be focusing on making sure they are putting a good deal towards retirement.
