How to water proof a built in planter box on rooftop
I have a condo in Dallas that has a rooftop patio. On the rooftop there is a planter box that has been built into the roof. I have been having leaks from the planter box so I pulled up all the plants and soil in the box to repair the leaks. The condo was built about 6 years ago and it looks like tar was originally put in the box to keep water from leaking into the condo. The tar has started to peel over the years which is why it is leaking. I have taken most of the old tar off and there is brick underneath. Before I repair the planter and replant I wanted to ask the best method for waterproofing the box to make sure it lasts long. The planter box is about 8' wide, 1 and 1/2' deep and 1 and 1/2" tall. It also has a pipe coming out along one side to drain water.

I appreciate your time in helping me get in the right direction with this project.

I'd start looking around for a plastic liner rather than try to water proof the brick box again. You could also use a roofing rubber membrane and hot mop it in the box.
