    Substitutes for British Recipes?
I am making a Lemon Velvet recipe from a English (not the language, the nationality) cookbook for my BritLit English class, and I need to use these ingredients:

    1 Lemon Jelly Tablet
Grated Rind and Juice of 1 Lemon
    300 ml of Water
15 oz of Ambrosia Devon Custard
    Fresh or Tinned Fruit

I have everything I need for my other two recipes (Leek and Potato Soup, and Savoury Meat Roll) but I cannot find any "Lemon Jelly Tablets" or "Ambrosia Devon Custard."

If anyone knows what I can use as useable substitutes for these two items, or how I can make some myself, it would be greatly appriciated.
I'm on the west coast of the continental U.S.A. if that helps.

I'd have to see the recipe, but what we call Jello, the Brits call "jelly." They sell it in both tablet or powdered form (jelly crystals) which is mixed with boiling water. Substitute a package of lemon jello.

The Ambrosia Devon Custard is a brand canned custard (pudding) I'd try vanilla pudding and pie filling, or Bird's English Custard, which is readily available in the US.

British movie, Scottish soldier in British Army hoapital [ 1 Answers ]

Several years ago, perhaps 45 or 50, there was a movie about a Scot in a British Army hospital. He was disliked, but in some manner touched everyone. He died and soldiers who disliked him were sad. I barely remember any more. It seems the Scot soldier was played by an up and coming british actor.
