Medicare Part B enrollment deadline and spousal employment
I am 68 and have not applied for Medicare Part B because I was covered under my wifes' company plan. I also have retiree health benefits which I have never used. My wife retired effective August 29, 2008 but we are still receiving full benefits until July 2009. I was told that I missed the deadline to enroll in Medicare Part B because there was an eight month window from her retirement date, and the fact that her healthcare benefits have continued does not count. So I missed by a few days. Now I can't enroll until first quarter 2010 and be on Part B until July 2010. My retiree benefits cover my dependents who are all eligible but only covers me for 80% after Medicare. Since I can't get on Medicare Part B until July 2010 I would appear to be mostly without non hospital coverage for a year, 7/9-7/10. Anyone who can suggest a possible way around this dillema? Thanks.

Look into a managed health plan that replaces the direct medicare

Part of the issue is also, the longer you don't apply when you do get medicare part B it may have a reduction in benefits slightly since you did not take it out when you turned 65.
