    Outboard engine was not winterized
I have an older (78 or 79) Evinrude 85 hp outboard engine. It has run very well for me since purchasing the boat in 2002. Due to a job change, where I was out of state (boat remained in Michigan), I did not have the engine winterized for the first time since owning it. I use a fuel treatment product called 'SeaFoam' at each fillup, and just read that Seafoam contains stabilizers which I'm hoping winterized the fuel. Could someone tell me what other things to look for or potential problems/solutions due to the lack of winterizing.

I am anxious to get out on the water soon, but want to check it first.

. Rust developing on the piston rings and cylinder walls.

. Hardened gum deposits inside the carburetor--bowl, float needle valve and seat.

    . Condensation in gas.

    . Gas tank rust.

You also want to check the lower drive, called the "foot." Change the gear oil but more importantly, watch closely the first thing that comes out of the drain. If it comes out milky, have the lower unit resealed to prevent water intrusion. Good time, too, for a new water pump impeller/kit.

I really appreciate the advice/comments. I plan to have new water pump/impeller kit installed and I'll check the lower unit as indicated. Thanks!
