Do riding mowers recharge the battery while in use like a car does?

Yes. Riding mower engines have an alternator built in that should charge the battery as the engine is running. Some have regulator and others use diodes as the regulator. Just depends on how it's set up. On average, you should be able to put a volt meter on your battery while running and have right at 13VDC or better at full throttle.
