Taxes for J1 visa holders in Massachusetts
    :) Hi,
This is my 2nd year doing research like a postdoc from chile in Massachusetts. For my maintenance I do receive fellowship payments from an international foundation. Last year I paid both federal and state taxes but now I've heard that j1 visa holders don't need to pay taxes for the first 2 years. What is true about this? How can I find out this?
    Thanks,
    Carlos

The pub is IRS Pub 901.

However, I checked it out and could find no tax treaty with Chile.

The provisions that allow J-1 visa holders to be exempt from taxes is covered by tax treaty, which does not exist between the U.S. and Chile.

    Sorry!
