Background: in December 2008 my blower on the Carrier wouldn't shut off -
So this guy advertising in Craigslist comes over and said oh he has parts he inheirited
From his dad and he was sure he had what I needed. So he replaces the transformer. My
Problem wasn't fixed. It was cold so I let the heater run and to turn off I simply pulled the
Plugs from the wall (scary because of the sparks) Now it is summer and down here it gets
Really hot so I call the same guy and he says OK I will come back and see what I can do -
He comes back yesterday and says well you need a new unit - bleh I tell him I don't have
Any money - I am living paycheck to paycheck and brown bagging my lunch. So he says
Well I can take the board home and try to fix it for another $350 and I told him he never
Fixed it in the first place and he charged me $400 for that visit in December. :cool:then he says
Well I have a "new" old AC that he had pulled from a house and
He could install it for $2850 - I told him hello I don't have any money, so he shook my
Hand and said good luck and he left.

After he left I opened the thing up and wrote down the model number and board number
And surfed and found you guys.

When I searched previous questions with answers, I see that the ICM271 control board
Will replace mine.

QUESTION:
How hard is it to install this board? Do I need special tools? I once replaced a belt on my
Electric dryer out of pure need. The Sears Kenmore Parts guy was very helpful.

I looked at eBay and Amazon and found a board for under $50 plus shipping. Can I find
This board locally? I live in San Antonio and have no idea where to shop for AC parts.

I found a link on how to install but the link was broken - it was a pdf file.

I am a first time homebuyer and didn't realize how needy a 50plus something year old
House would be. The AC was built in 1984 and the compressor? (the thing that sits
Outside) runs very quietly.

Any help will be appreciated (I have paypal :P)

Postscript: I had asked him to turn the pilot off and all he did was turn the knob outside
Of the unit (looks like a water spicket but it is for gas) and when I was getting the model
Number I noticed some instructions saying how to turn the pilot off and he didn't turn that
White knob that has off/on where the control board for the gas is located. Is that a

I am not aware of any a/c unit that runs on gas for one. And for two why in the world would you have someone from craigslist come and service your a/c unit using parts from who knows where? I am baffled here big time.

I would definitely contact a licensed a/c repair person who works for a bonafide company come and look at the unit and tell you what exactly is wrong with it. I can't figure out if the craigslist guy ran off with your board or not. If he did, oh well, there was no telling if it was working or not. If he didn't run off with it, then keep it for the next repair person to properly install back into the unit.

Chances are pretty good though that by hiring someone from craigslist who does not have a business license to perform a/c repairs you sure got soaked and soaked good. The person could have used a multitester to test the part that is thought to be bad. You don't just randomly keep replacing this part and that part until you discover (miraculously) what part was bad. No. You TEST each part using a multitester to see if the part is bad. I guess you could say you just got a very, very expensive lesson in a/c repair from a "real pro" who likes to take people for a ride.

Anytime I've ever had a/c problems when I lived in South Florida (land of perpetual a/c) I always watched the repairmen test every component to see if it was good or bad. At least that much is common knowledge or should be to any homeowner. I'm not berating you by any means here, I'm just trying to hopefully educate you to the wonderful world of repairpeople who aren't honest. I'm a lady and believe me I watch the repair people like a hawk whether it is my a/c, furnace, car or anything. And I learn a lot.

You should not really be trying to install a board in your a/c unit either by yourself. Not literally being able to see the problem I can't tell you how dangerous this could be to you to install it yourself due to the high voltage involved.

Please get a for real professional to look and test your unit before you try and do this repair yourself.

If you need help and want to install it yourself. I am on most evening and will help you threw it. Does your blower com on as soon as you turn the power on to your unit? There are lots of things I would check before I bought a control board!

Hi there thank you for such quick responses - the craigslist guy is a licensed AC guy but works for himself. I have a family friend who looked at my ac unit and identified the part that is intermittently working then not working. He said that since my unit was so old he would have a hard time finding the replacement part - what he wanted was to replace the ac with something new or newer. My problem is this I have limited monies period.
Thanks Josh I appreciate the offer of help I should be getting my part within a week - the person I bought it from on eBay has 100% positive feedback with over 300 people being satisfied saying it is exactly as described so I feel fairly confident that what I am getting is new
Twinkie - in response to your statement about an ac unit not running on gas - I never said it ran on gas, the heater runs on gas. I gave the model number and I really do appreciate your concern but I am really hoping that someone like Josh would answer my questions that can help me - the circuit board doesn't look scary at all there are a few wires coming off the transformer - I just want to be prepared and have the right tools.
So Josh I definitely will take you up on your offer
Now to answer your question:

When I plug in the unit, the fan automatically starts running - even with the thermostat set to off. When I take off the cover there is a kill switch that automatically shuts the unit off - on th circuit board, if I tap the little box to the right (there are two boxes exactly the same size, the one I tapped is labeled HFR) and push in the kill switch then the blower shuts off like it should. From what I have been reading regarding "the blower that continuously stays on" - it comes down to this freaking circuit board.
This is what I bought and it should be here by next week - I will I'm you on aim if you don't mind - I will pm you my user name

I am having a similar issue with my blower not cutting off my carrier 58GP075-03 furnace unit. This house was built in 1986 so I assume this unit is that old. I purchased it in 2011. Also the pilot light went out for the first time (is there a reason for this) I got that re lit and the furnace runs fine so basically I am in the same boat as Sara above but with no one to diagnose the issue due to funds. I am willing to do the work to fix it but need some guidance. Thanks.
