    Filing taxes for two states
    Ladies and Gentlemen,

I worked in two different states last year but have residency in one state. Do I have to pay state income tax in both states? If not, how do I get a refund ofr what I paid into the non resident state?

Yes, you have to file in both states (assuming that both states have income tax). First you fill out a non-resident income tax return for the state you worked in but did not live in. They will tax you on your wages that you earnd working in that state. Then you complete a standard full-year resident income tax form for your home state. They will require you to report all income - all your wages (earned both in-state and out-of-state)as well as any other taxable income (dividends, capital ganis, etc). You calculate a preliminary tax on the full amount. Then you take a credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions (that is, the other state you worked in). Hope this helps.
