Windows Media Player will play AVI files. A lot of other applications will play it, also. Normally, AVI files do not require Codecs in order to be played.

Try double-clicking on the files and see if a program opens them up and plays them. If that doesn't happen, specifically open Windows Media Player and open the files from within that program. If they do not play, then they probably aren't standard AVI files.
