I lived and worked in NYC for 4 yrs, recently moving to IL in October 2008. For the 08 tax yr, I was in NYC Jan 01, 2008-Sept 30, 2008 then moved to Illinois Oct 1, 2008-Dec 31, 2008. I stayed with the same company, just relocated. I have 2 W-2's from the same employer.
On my NY W-2, 1 section says TOTAL STATE on it with the State Wages (box 16) blank, state income tax (box 17) has an amount and locality name (line 20) is NYC. The next copy doesn't have "TOTAL STATE" on it, but has box 16 filled in (where the other one is blank), box 17 as a different amount, and the rest is the same. I'm not sure which copy to go by the TOTAL STATE or the one that isn't total state since line 17's are different and 16 is blank on one and not on the other.

My Illinois W-2 has boxes 1 & 3 as the same as the NY W-2. I was only in IL 3 months, so how do I know how much I made in IL? Is it the amount in box 16 (state wages & tips) of the IL? If I add up State Wages on the IL to State Wages on NY, it doesn't equal any amounts on either W-2.
I'm not sure which section to use when I enter the numbers.
I got a refund the past few years that I lived in NY and this year, according to the professionals that I took it to, I owe money. I don't trust them because they didn't seem to understand my W-2's from the beginning.
2 questions - which numbers should I be going by? & how long did I need to live in NY to be considered full year vs part year?

It should not be too hard to determine what your Illinois income is, so I am surprised the W-2 does not show it.

Contact your employer to see if the W-2 is correct.
