    How can I find out if an american has a criminal record in spain
    It may have been from 30 years ago

    Well first most likely you may never,
    I know when I worked for the police, it would take almost 2 to 3 weeks to get a criminal history from Spaim ourselves.

    Are they willing to sign a form that states you are allowed to run a criminal history on them ?
