Filed 1040EZ form instead of 1040NREZ.
    Hi,
I'm an F1 student from India right now on OPT.I came to US in 2006 fall and I've worked in university as a grad assistant in 2006,2007 and 2008.The problem is I've filed taxes for 2006 and 2007 using online tax filing software, for 2006 I didn't get any kind of refund but for 2007 returns I've got a stimulus check of 300$ which I recently came to know that I wasn't supposed to get. This year I realized that non residents are not supposed to file taxes online(I think it only provides 1040ez form not 1040nrez).So how can I rectify my past two year (2006,2007) returns.Should I to send IRS a 300$ check. As I'm on opt I don't have a job yet and I don't have that kind of money.I came to know from some online blogs I can amend past returns by filing some 1040x form along with corrected 1040nrez.I can send the amendment forms but if I have to send money at this point of time I can't do it.Is there a deadline for these amendments like do I need to send them before April 15th,and what kind of changes do I need to make on 1040x forms to let them know that I'm trying to amend returns of 2006,2007(like do I need on write on them in ink saying amendment for a particular year).

Please help me with this problem,

    Thanks ,
    Suman

You will file amended tax return. For amending your tax return, you must file IRS Form 1040-X with properly done nonresident tax return Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843. Column A is what was on the original return, Column C is what should have been there (that is corrected amounts) and Column B is the difference. Complete these columns and then refigure your tax. If you owe tax, write check to United States Treasury and enclose with the amended return.

Yeah thanks for the reply ,but my question is do I need to file the amendment before April 15th because if I have to pay IRS some money I can't pay it now as I don't have a that money at this point.

    Thanks,

    Suman:

If you are Indian, the odds are your amendment will be neutral (you will get no refund nor will you owe any additional tax) if you did not claim any education credit when you filed.

Regardless, you need to fix this problem less it become an obstacle should you decide to apply for a green card.
