Shower drain connection to toilet sewer line
[F][F] Hi... just found this site with a Google search so am a newby here! We live in a raised ranch and have a half bath (toilet and vanity) in a lower floor bathroom. Bathroom floor is about 4 ft. below ground surface. Fixtures and drains were installed when house was built. We would like to add a shower in the bathroom... there's plenty of room where a hot water heater used to sit, and the cold in, hot out lines were capped when the heater was moved to another location so water flow should not be a concern. The question is shower drain installation: The shower base would be 6-8 ft. from the toilet. Can the shower drain be connected to the toilet drain? A cut through the existing floor would be needed, but I'm not sure how deep the toilet sewer is buried under the basement floor for connection to the main sewer outflow. Avoiding a possible sewage backup to the shower drain is also a concern, as is whether additional venting will be needed. Most appreciate your suggestions... LesC37

Toilet drain will be about 12-16" below the slab. Yes, you can connect to that pipe with Y ( 4"x2" or 3"x 2", depending on existing sewer pipe ). Shower should have its own vent - and of course - its own trap. Just run vent up the wall and connect with existing vent about 48" above the floor. Do not worry about sewer back ups into your shower. Shower drain will be bit higher than toilet sewer, therefore upslope. However, yes, back up into your shower pan may happen if blockage of the main sewer pipe occurs.

Milo gave you the UPC version which runs a separate vent on everything including the family dog. Let me show you how the other 90 percent of the country would plumb your shower. Of course you would have to trap the drain but instead of connecting to the toilet drain we connect to the vanity drain line where it will be wet vented. This eliminates having to run a separate vent on the shower. I like lots of options and now you have two to pick from. Good luck in whatever you choose. Tom

Tom, my comment was not meant to challenge your advice. You made a good point. I just wanted to make clear he won't be connecting into 1 1/2" drain. Cheers...
No prob Milo! I ddn't think you were stepping on my answer. You brought up a very good point. Connecting to 1 1/2" is asking for a clog.l Have a good one! Tom
