    Lawn tractor spark plugs
This is a continuation of my problem below (03-21-09) regarding john deere 300 not starting in spring .

Dealer said I should try changing spark plugs before they come to pick it up to see what is wrong with it... my tractor is only 1 year old, is it normal that the spark plugs could be bad? And need replacing?

How could I tell if spark plugs are bad?

I live in northeast, so it is just starting to get a little warmer.

Hey, the lawnmower needs a tune up too. At least once a season:

    1. Gap and replace spark plug
    2. Replace air cleaner
    3. Sharpen blades
    4. Clean, inspect and lube.
    5. Oil change/fuel filter

Once a season is the absolute minimum.

Never store gas in tank. Use Sta-bil in FRESH gas if the gas will be stored longer than a month. Use high octane fuel.

While I agree with KISS that everythingincluding a tractor should get spruced up now and then, a one year old mower should start without new plugs. Now I would recommend draining the fuel and starting with fresh gas. It ran in the fall but not now, only thing that should change is the freshness of the fuel. Is this a real Deere or one from Home Depot, they aren't the same.

    Usually disconnect the fuel line.

There is some troubleshooting info in the sticky in this section.

Well I hope you were thinking of a good reputation at least. Yep, just disconnect the fuel line as it attaches to the carb, usually just squeeze the red hose clip with standard plyers. I have no first hand experiences but have heard from friends that they have had issues with their HD Deere tractors. PS what happens when you click on Rate this Answer?

It says I must spread reputation even though I have not sent you anything... same with other people

Sorry to sound dumb, but not sure what you mean... I see fuel line that comes from somewhere from back of tractor, it runs below fuses and there are 2 clips that I removed to change fuel filter than it runs up to engine.

To me it seems like if I undo it at fuel filter I could not get tubing down low enough to let gravity do the job... sorry if I am not making myself clear.

You are doing fine. Disconnect the line of eirrther side of the filter or where the line ends at the carb.

Anything below the tank will drain. Removing the gas cap will make it drain faster. Whatever is convenient.

It's useful sometimes to install a gas valve on the fuel line. Use that to cut off the engine.
