    So is my house haunted?
Hi, sorry if this is a bit long but a lot of stuff has happened!

My house is about 80 years old, and me and my family moved in 2 years ago. Everything was fine until 3 months after we moved in. Me and my sister in law started getting weird scratches, a lot like cat scratches, on our forearms and the backs of our legs, we don't have any animals. Since May 08' we've been coughing and sneezing our eyes have been watering. All this happens only if we kneel down in front of the main TV in the living room, and put our faces close to the carpet.

We don't have any allergies, and we had the carpet cleaned recently. Also, as I was going upstairs I felt a sharp prod on the back of my leg, and I swear I heard a cat mewing. A few days ago, I was sat at my laptop and suddenly the glass of water that was on my desk flew off and landed about 2 meters away from where I was. I was startled and when I surveyed the damage, it was like the glass had been tipped, so the water spilled, and then thrown. Yesterday night, I was awake at about half three in the morning. My kids and husband were asleep, I was the only one awake. I heard knocking coming from downstairs, 5 knocks... pause... 5 knocks. Then I heard footsteps walking across the kitchen floor, and the distinctive sound of the fridge door slamming shut. After that, feeling terrified by this point, I heard the sound of our sliding glass door being shook. I tried to go to sleep. My daughter, heart pounding, ran into our room and jumped on the bed with her duvet. She's 12 and she'd heard the noises too and was really scared. She's now taken to listening to her iPod as she sleeps in case the noises come back. :(

The next day, I asked both sets of neighbours on either side of my house, if they had been awake or making any noise. They both said no, and since one couple is elderly, they go to bed even earlier than our other neighbours so it definitely wasn't them. We've also had funny smells in the house, like that musty, vanilla-ish smell of old ladys perfume, and another smell of musty earth. We also have the constant feeling of being watched, and I swear someone was once stood over me in bed. I did some research on the previous person who lived in the house. I asked my neighbours who've lived next door for 20 years, and they said she was an old woman called Belle who had a cat. She was apparently quite mean and kept herself to herself. This is quite scary info given the other stuff that's happened. :(

So anyway, any idea's? Do you think my house is haunted?

I would begin seeking a logical explanation based on what your surroundings are. As far as the watery eyes and other physical problem, could be fumes in the carpet, or elsewhere in the house, mold, mildew under the carpet or in another place.

As far as the knocks and scratches, could be mice, rats, squirrel, or other vermin in the house walls, ceiling, etc knocking things around.

I don't believe anyone can definatively say whether any one place is haunted. A lot of people don't believe in such phenomenon, however I do. In most "haunting" cases that I've encountered, you simply announcing to the "haunt" that you are aware of it's presence, and are not afraid of it, and would like for it to either leave, or at the very least stop being a pest. I've had this happen to me in a couple places I've lived, and so has close family and friends. This normally works. Also, if you are a person with strong faith, and or religious views, put different items around your house that are representations of said faith/religion.
Remember that not all "hauntings" are actually hauntings, but rather a type of psychosis. Now I'm not saying that you made any of this up, but your mind is a very powerful tool, and can actually cause your body to display symptoms of scratches, or other ailments that would otherwise be caused by other sources.
If all else fails, talk to a priest or someone with strong religion/faith beliefs and ask them to come in a do a "purifying" prayer, and or ritual. This may help you feel better, and may dispose of any negative energy that could be in your house.
    Good luck.

Oh I'm not saying the house isn't, I'm just saying I would seek a logical explination. If there is a rat or squirell running around scratching her arms, or mold in the floor causing the allgergies, then it shouldn't be dismissed as a ghost so fast, vermin carry diseases.

Set a rat trap and see what happens... note I said rat trap NOT a mouse trap..

Andrewc24301, I agree with you totally. Please don't misunderstand what I was saying in my previous post. I was by no means trying to dismiss what you were saying. You have a very valid point. I was addressing the question at hand, and I'm sorry I didn't give you a little credit. You deserve it, because especially the mold/mildew is more than likely accurate. Just a little water spill even cleaned up right away can cause mold/mildew in the carpet, or in the floorboards even if shampooing the carpets has been a regular chore. Those spores are nasty! :)
And on the chance that vermin big or small are inhabitting that house, she definitely needs to get them out ASAP! The little critters carry diseases that are transferred without scratches and or bites... coming from their fur or their waste. Not a good scene no matter how you look at it.

    No offence taken homebirthmom.

Although I generally consider myself a rational man, I still get spooked poking around in an old house after dark...

It's phycological, but a can be a lot of fun. :)
