International Student - OPT - How to amend Turbo tax filing!
    Hi There,

I just filed my taxes using turbo tax and got to know that international students can't file their taxes using turbo tax. With respect to my refunds Although I didn't get any stimulus check or anything - I am going to receive an extra 100$ in return. The refund would be into my bank account directly by around March 27th - April 2nd (2009) dates.

Please advise me how to file an amended tax form?
How should I return the extra money to the IRS?

    Regards
    SN

You will file amended tax return. For amending your tax return, you must file IRS Form 1040-X with properly done nonresident tax return Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843.

Column A is what was on the original return, Column C is what should have been there (that is corrected amounts) and Column B is the difference. Complete these columns and then refigure your tax.

I am very much grateful for the reply...

    have 2 more questions...

    1) Once I fill up the 1040X and 1040 NR EZ form... should I make a check for the extra money I am going to get from the IRS and send it along with the docs or should I return a check with all the money that I am going to get back. What is the easiest way to give IRS back the extra money I am going to get?

    2) As I filed through turbo tax earlier, the direct deposit is going to be between march 27 - April 2nd 2009. So should I wait for the funds to come into my account before filing the amended docs or should I immediately send the amended documents?

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much again.

I have the same question as 1)... do you have to make a check for the extra money that you get from the original return? To whom do you make the check payable?

    Thanks.

I contacted the IRS and they say to make a check for the extra amount and send it back. Check should be addressed to US Dept. of Treasury.
