The Best Free Screen Capture Utilities
    Hi, all!

I'm wondering what sort of screen capture utilities that you might like to use? I would preferably like to know about those that are free and safe to download.

I've been using Printscreen2000, but it seems to be giving out on me.

    Thanks!

What are you trying to do as the normal inbuilt capture options may well be enough.

Simple Prnt Scrn and paste into image app captures the entire screen
    AND
Alt + prnt Scrn plus paste captures the active window.

Okay, I see what you're saying. I've just pressed the Print Screen button, and it gave me some other options to do.

Seems to work well! I've never tried that previously. Doing it that way might actually save me some time!

    Thanks, Ben!

The disadvantage of using the Printscreen key is it will capture the WHOLE screen. Alt+Printscreen will capture the active window.

But often you only need to capture a portion of the screen. You can crop what you captured after the capture, however.

Personally, I use Snag-It, but that's not freeware.

    Thanks, Scott!

Would a program that's open be considered to be an active window.

    Thanks!

No, it has to be both open and have focus. In other words, the cursor as to be active within the window. Alt+Printscreen also does not work with sub windows. For example, you might have a dialog box open in Word, but if you use Alt+Printscreen the whole Word window would be captured.

I use IrfanView for all my screen capture cropping resizing needs. It's free, it's powerful, and it has its own builtin capture commands too if you prefer to use them.

Works great with Alt-PrtScrn, too, paste the memory pic into IrfanView and crop away.

    Thanks, JBeaucaire!

I also have IrfanView. It's the main viewer and editor that I use for images. I didn't know that it had a screen capture function. I'll look for that in it.

    Thanks again!

artlady agrees: On the IrfanView website they have a list of add-ons for their app. It is always growing.
I'll be sure to check that out, artlady.

    Thanks!
