    Roman tub drain
I am building a shower/bath out of tile. It will mainly be used as a shower. But we want the option to soak once in a while. I am building this the traditional way with a vinyl pan liner. I need a roman tub drain for the bath/shower. I do not want to use the kierdi system. Oatey discontinued there Roman tub drains for tile installation. I have found Brasstech 237 drain but cannot find the EZ test or Casper 140NC it fits. What do you recommend as a drain for this installation? And the links to sites where I can purchase them? I have already built a tiled shower so know how to do the bath/shower. I just can't find that drain.

Tom said it: this is the only drain designed for your application. I think the Brasstech 237 is it. Don't forget to waterproof as high as the walls of the tub + 12"...

I will post better photos of the drain than Tom's... but it is basically the same thing

Thanks guys on your comments. I have been search the internet a few days for the drains I need. Like Tom comments said, it may not work with the vinyl pan liner. The other product I see is from Oatey. They don't make the Roman tub drain anymore. Sucks. I have seen the brasstech 237 but it does not fit the tile type drains that can connect to the vinyl pan. I have only worked with vinyl pans and have never hot mopped. I don't really have the equiptment for it. More comfortable with the old style. If anyone finds a link to a site that has what I described it would make my day. Thanks.

This drain will fit both Liner and Hot Mop applications.

What do you call ""tile type drain that connects to vinyl pan ?" Please, explain...

Since you plan on using your new tub as Roman Tub than you have to Hot Mop. Liner won't to. To find a hop-mop contractor, consult your Yellow Pages.

Sorry, not good at the terminolgy. I am referencing a flange type shower drain that works with a liner. And a roman tub top that would fit into the flange drain instead of a strainer. The actual project will mainly be used as a shower, 95% of the time. The bath option would need the roman tub top. So it only needs to hold water for a little while. Hopefully I don't have to do the Hot mop. Want to keep the costs down. Any link to a site with the flange drain, used with tile installation, and a roman tub top that will fit would help greatly. Thanks.

There is confusion in your terminology. Jacuzzi tub type drain and Soaker Tub ( aka Japanese Tub or Roman tub ) Drain are two completely different types of drains.

If you built your own tub that you had to waterproof yourself ( hot mop or PVC liner ) than it is called Soaker Tub (or Japanese Tub / Roman tub) and you have to use drain Tom and I suggested to you in above posts. This drain does not come with overflow. Here, you cannot use conventional Oatey tub drain with pop-up stopper.

If you purchased pre-made PVC shower base or any type of plastic tub with drain opening on the bottom than it will use conventional drains. For shower, you will use regular shower drain w/o stopper and for Jacuzzi and regular type tubs you will use Overflow Assembly.

They type of drain that works with liner is the one Tom and I suggested to you in our posts #2 and #3.

Please, tell us: what kind of shower / tub do you have? You can post photo of it and we will ID it ourselves. I will wait for your answer. Thank you. Milo

I hadn't heard that term, I guess it is a soaker tub... tub/shower, made with our own membrane / mortar bed

Thank you so much for your prompt response.

Also, used a Sioux Chief, I thought it was Oatey, I hope this is salvagable... :(

First and Third photo do not indicate you water proofed your pan. Water proofing is done on rough framing and over studs and blocks. The backing board goes over it. Please, confirm my observation is incorrect.

The drain you are showing comes in 2 parts. Bottom and top half. It appears to me from the Third photo that you put both drains together (top and bottom) and poured concrete base w/o liner. If that's the case than it is wrong.

    The process is as follows...

    1. Bottom part of the drain as shown in photo #1. Attach the drain to the drain.
    2. Install lining over the drain ( in one piece ) and at least 12" ( for showers ). If you are building soaker tub - than go 12" over water line.
    3. Install Upper portion of the drain on the Bottom part - and over the lining. In other words, upper half will squeeze the liner between bottom and upper part of the drain. Secure with 4 bolts. Some installers even put Henry 208 sealer between upper half of the drain and the lining for better seal. Secure the upper half of the drain with the 4 bolts ( they are shown in photo #1 on the inside of the drain ).
    4. Pour concrete...

Do not cut the liner inside the drain until entire tub is finished and sealed.

Is that how it was done ? Please confirm... Thank you. Milo

Yes, how you explained it is how we did it. My question is only what type of 2" insert into the drain will the roman tub trim fit onto... see the trim piece below

That Trim Piece attaches to the top of the Upper Portion of the drain. I see from photo #3 that part of the drain was already installed.

The trim should have come with the rough in. That's how we always purchase it. It is already attached. I am not 100% sure whether you can install loose trim on any drain. I hope so. Call BrassTech tomorrow and ask them. I hope it is possible.

Let me know how you did... Milo

Lordie Lord... I'm in a world of hurt

Yes, not only did I ASSUME, I had all the right materials, I crossed manufacturers.

I ASSUMED the roman tub drain TBD309 from Trim by Design would fit like the Oatey Roman Tub Drain - wrong. Oatey is 4" screws 3 3/8" on center, My TBD is 3 1/2" screws are 2 3/4" on center. I have a 2" stub to work with and am searching desparately for something that will fit or looking for any finish of the Oatey.

So, in order not to tear out my entire tub/shower base, I am still hopeful I can find something.

I found a TBD spec today which referenced Jones Stevens - I have a call into them.:(

I too am building a bathtub from ceramic tile over a very heavy rubber (vinyl?)liner. The drain assembly that Milo posted is exactly what I'm looking for, but can't find. WHERE can I get one?

    Thanks,

    John

Some Home Depots carry it. If not, there is many Internet based stores that carry it. Here is a link directly on the drain you need: Westbrass D320-26 Universal Roman Tub Drain Polished Chrome - eFaucets.com

Good luck with your project... Milo
