I recently bought a 94 ford probe from a private seller. The for sale sign said 40k on new engine. I bought the car the following week. The first time I drove I on the interstate it fell out of 5th gear. The next day the clutch went out.The "nice" lady who sold it to me did not tell of the trans problem, and is on vacation for a week. I bought this car specificlly for my own vacation in Oct. Do I have any path of recourse? PLEASE HELP,. PROBED IN VIRGINIA:(

Unless VA has unusual laws protecting you for such things, you purchased that vehicle as is. I think you're out of luck.

I browsed about VAs Lemon Law and it does not seem to offer any remedy.

I agree with Rick.

When you buy a used car in a private sale, you are buying it "as is".

That is why it is important to get the car checked out by a mechanic before you buy it.

Probably not. Essentially you bought the car "as is." There's really no way to tell what was specifically wrong with the car before you bought it and what went wrong after you bought it. Unfortunately, this is a common problem with private automobile sales. Taking it to a mechanic for a check before agreeing to buy it would have been wise.
