How do I know when my honda element needs? Is there an indicator light for this?

There's no light. The safest thing to do is to check pad/shoe thickness. There is a metal wear sensor, which will start to make a "screaching" noise, when disc brake pads get really worn. It will be a metal-on-metal noise, every time you brake.

Be sure to change your brake fluid every two years, for a host of reasons. When you change the brake pads, clean and grease the caliper pins with silicone grease.
