Collection agency playing "switcharoo" with settlement offer
I responded to a phone call from a collection agency/law firm to settle a credit card account.

I explained to the woman on the phone that I was in a position right now to settle for $500.00. She said $500.00 is too low, but I know they'll accept half the balance which was something around $650.00(she had the exact amount all ready). I also stated that I am willing to do an electronic payment over the phone as soon as she faxes me the agreement. She said "o.k. i'll call you back as soon as i get final authorization.

three days went by, and my mom called and said to call "shauna" immediatly. i called shauna and it was the collection agency wanting to know "what happened" "you were supposed to pay off this debt". i had no idea why they were calling my mom!

i told shauna that i had an agreement to pay the 650. and she said in a very sarcastic and ghetto tone " oh no! She never offered you that amount! " this is not lets make a deal" this is not lets make a deal" where do you work, I'm having your wages attached". " where do you work, i'm having your wages attached".

So, my jaw was dropped! I never was talked to like that! I was excited about having this debt off my shoulders! So now I want to know if I have any rights to have my debt paid off for the amount originally offered to me. They kept the interest rising, and I refuse to pay anymore. I want this removed from my credit. What should I do?

They lie, the one person never even intended it to be a real offer, or they would have faxed a offer to you.

They get a commission and this one is using fear and threats, the next thing they try.

Are you not glad you did not send the money with no letter.

Send them a letter stating as per conversation on this date you agree to a settlement of $500.00, This offer is valid for the next 72 hours only.
Please send settlement statement regarding this settlement, notarized that you accept.

Failure to does will constitutes default and your part, and I hereby dispute the alleged debt and demand strick poof of your alleged claim. Please provide the original contract bearing a wet ink signature.

This is only a suggestion, but it will sjhow that you did attempt to settle with honor
