Back taxes for someone who has not filed income tax returns
    Hi,

How do you pay back taxes for someone (who was on a F1 visa) who has not paid their federal and state tax returns for the years worked (2003-2005)?

The amount earned in each of those years was less than 7000 dollars. Is it true that a federal return need not be filed for amounts less than 9000 dollars?

How does one go about paying these back taxes?

    Thanks.

    P.

On F1 you are nonresident for 5 years. You must file tax return if your income is more than the personal exemption amount, which is $3500 for 2008.
So you must file all the past returns. You may not owe any tax as you will get treaty deduction. But you must file. You will have problem if you apply for green card or other change of status.

First complete a tax return. You may not owe any tax. If you owe, then attach Form 1040-V for that year and attach the check.
