    Early withdrawel from 401
Hello, I would like to withdraw all of my 401 retirement, I currently still work for this company. They told me I could withdraw my money unless I leave they company or until retirement age ( which I am not) How do I get my money, why I need it is none of their business but I should be able to get my own money. Any info would be greatly appreicated. :)sc

Most 401(k) plans do not allow in-service withdrawals, unless you are of retirement age, or unless you need the money for one of the hardship purposes. So what they told you is accurate. Your best option is to take a loan from your 401(k) rather than making a withdrawal. A key advantage to this is that you don't get hit hit with taxes or the 10% early withdrawal fee. But if you really want to make a withdrawal - you'll have to use the money for one of the following "hardship" purposes:

    1. Un-reimbursed medical expenses for you, your spouse, or dependents.
    2. Purchase of an employee's principal residence.
    3. Payment of college tuition and related educational fees and expense such as room and board for the next 12 months for you, your spouse, dependents, or children who are no longer dependents.
    4. Payments necessary to prevent eviction of you from your home, or foreclosure on the mortgage of your principal residence.
    5. Funeral expenses
    6. Repair of a primary residence.
