Why isn't my water softner draining?
I have a Kenmore water softener that came with the house. The house is only eight years old, so the softener could be somewhere equal to or less than that in age. My problem is that the softener doesn’t drain properly. I don’t pretend to understand how a softener system works, but I can tell you I hear it run about once a week and water drains through a hose that exits the same drain as my clothes washer. Yet … the water level in the softener tank continues to rise and I have to bail water about every three weeks. What’s happening?

You have a seal problem. In the kenmore/sears/GE Softeners there is a main hub under the motor. Every cycle in the regeneration process takes place right there.
Here is the problem. Many times the gaskets in that hub get corroded and don't perform correctly. (by perform correctly I mean they don't create a seal when they are supposed to) So what happens is that after the last cycle which is to fill the brine tank up and get it ready for the next regeneration cycle, the gasket doesn't seal off the water and so it continually is putting water into your brine tank. Now in the brine tank itself there should be a float assembly inside of a black tube. Check your water level and make sure that it is not above that float assembly. If the water level is above that the float needs to be replaced as well as the seal/gasket assembly. Both easy fixes. If you would like more information about those email me [email protected] I will be happy to help you out.
