I have cleaned the trap and used trap cleaning liquid. This helps for a short time and then the odor returns.

I would remove the stopper and see if there isn't a bunch of hair and gunk in there. Some of the other pros here will most likely give you some better methods for cleaning with liquids(home remedies). I would try dumping some bleach down the drain. But some of the guys here have some pretty nifty concoctions that I bet will work better.

I have never had much luck just using some kind of cleaner or bleach poured into the drain or the drain over flow.
I always change the pop-up mechanism going through the lavatory, and also the trap if needed. These parts can be purchased at Home Depot or other hardware stores.

I agree with Lee and Letmetellu, remove the stopper shine a light and look for hair if any clean it all, clean the pop up, and do this mix 1/2 a cup of backing soda and 1/2 cup of table salt pour it in sink drain and add 1 cup of vinegar, leave it over night when you get up in the morning pour a bucket of very hot (boiling) water in the sink and open the faucet to flush some more water, and see how that worked, Thanks.

Thanks. I poured bleach in and left overnight. Flushed with boiling water. So far -2 hours later-it seems to be OK.

I have used bleach and flushed. If this doesn't work, I will replace the parts.
