PC randomly shut down due to thermal problem
    Hi all,

My PC will randonly shut down once in a while since few months ago. Recently the situation getting serious. The PC shut down not less than 5 times in 3 days.

The PC just shut down without any warning and when I boots it again, the cpu will make some "siren-like" noise for few seconds. Then the screen will display a warning and informing that the cpu has been shut down due to over-heating.

I cleaned the cpu to remove all the dusk that blocking the air circulation. I installed software to monitor the temperature of the system as well. The temperature showed by the software seems to be OK.

Anyone has any suggestions? That will really help a lot.

    Thank you.

I would consider replacing your CPU heatsink/fan and getting one or two case fans also to increase the air flow within the unit.

If you are at the computer as soon as it restarts go into the bios and see the core tempature I'm guessing its an intel since it has the automatic shutoff for overheating and as I've posted in other places the intel stock fans don't last long (that is if you are using an intel fan) either way simply check your temps and buy a new fan as suggested above also I suggest keeping your PC away from heat vents, windows and so on basically anywhere that is generally hotter especially if the air is hotter that will most definitely increase case temp and cpu temp because it can't disperse the heat

Anyone ever remove that mat of felt (actually matted dust) that accumulated under the fan in any but the cleanest of rooms that blocks airflow and makes it overheat?

I mean all of it... and blow the dust out of everything else, it can accumulate rather badly everyplace.

If you know someone with an air compressor and a blow gun... its better, if you don't some canned air will do alost as well.

My wife's a fanatic about the vacuum cleaner and I still have to do it once or twice a year.

And as was previously mentioned... you likely have a fan failing too.
