    Credit card debt
While ill (bipolar) I ran up a credit card debt between 7 to 8 thousand dollars. I am on Social Security Disability, have no asets except a 10 year old van. The credit card company is looking for debt payment. I can't afford payments. They keep adding late fees and interest. I mailed them a letter explaining my situation. It is very upsetting. I was never able to hold a full time job. What solutions do I have?

I have a similar problem over here in the uk. I got help from a forum (based in uk) not sure if you have a dedicated .com version or similar. But ask about on there they are very helpful. As far as I am aware, over here if you dispute your CC they cannot add interest/late fees. Try searching for a consumer forum in the states, they will help you out with 95% of the problem Not sure if the link is allowed or not.

Inability to pay is not a defense. Not sure if you are trying to say you were mentally incompetent to make those charges, but I doubt if that will fly either.

Bottomline thjough is that you are essentially judgement proof. So the credit cards may try to get a judgement against you, but if your only income is from exempt sources, then the won't be able to collect.

JUST don't pay them anything after you wrote your letter or send them 25 dollars a month as they cannot do anything to you except call you up all the time or send them zero. Your credit will be ruined and a couple years later you will be sent credit cards again. I went to a financial counselor and this is what I learned.
