    Claiming a dependent out of states.
    Can I claim my brother as a dependent bt he live out of state.

    You can not claim a non-resident.

    Assuming you and he are boht either U.S. citizens or resident aliens, you CAN claim him IF:

    - you provided more than half of his total support.

    - he made LESS than $3,500 in 2008.

I've had joint custody of my daughter for 7 yrs. I am wondering if I can claim her on my taxes every other year. I have called the child support agency here and just get the run around they could give me an answer. But it seemed to be OK with the mother. Thank for any help
