We are rebuilding an old farm house and have a new steel roof. We hate the idea of putting holes in a roof that doesn't leak! Trailer vents are installed inside walls can the vents be put through the wall of the bath rooms rather than through the ceiling and roof?

No, vent has to terminate at least 6" above the roof line. You can run your vent surface mounted, on the outside wall and terminate it above the eve.

What if we terminate the pipe through the wall to the out side with a check vent, but under the eve? We have large eves on the east side (one of the vent locations) and putting a pipe up the wall the over the eve would look pretty strange.

I agree, surface-mounted plumbing is an eye-sore, but can be utilized in certain situations. That's why I thought I should mention this option as well...

There is a problem with check valve on vent:
1. Vent not only allows air inward during flush but also is a gravity vent for sewer gases which slowly raise through the venting system to the outside. If you have more vents around your house, especially those venting major plumbing fixtures, than you could, perhaps, get away with installing AAV vent on small fixture, like sink. Check with your Plumbing Inspector if this type of vents are allowed.

2. Sewer gases will accumulate bellow the eves. Sewer gas will hang there until it is blown around the house by winds. It will smell around your house like sewer. Also, sewer gas will enter your house via open doors and windows. Wider eve, bigger problem.

It is not such a big deal to properly install vent through metal roof. I am sure sheet-metal guys that installed your roof do it all the time.

My code sez that you may terminate out the wall but not under the eves and with a screen instead of a AAV,(check valve)

Sections 1404.4 and .5 Of the Standard Plumbing Code, (Extensions Through Wall) allows you to extend vent terminals through a wall providing that,
1- No vent terminal shall be located directly beneath any door, window or other ventilating opening of the building
2- No vent shall be located within 10 feet horizontally of such a opening unless it's at least 2 feet above the top of such opening.It goes on to say, they shall be screened and shall not terminate under the overhang of the building.
In short, you may connect to a existing roof vent that goes through the roof but you must stay away from all openings. Good luck and thank you for rating my answer. Tom
