    Degaussing a TV screen
The corners of my TV screen are severely discolored. I understand this is a result of magnetism from other electronics, and I've already fixed that issue. However, I want to get rid of the discoloration. The television I have is a Sylvania SSC192, I think. I no longer have any packaging for it, but it seems to be that one when I look online. They say some newer televisions have a degaussing feature built in, but I don't know how to use it. Can anyone please enlighten me? Thank you.

The auto-degausing usually occurs automatically on power up.

A manual degausing coil can be used for severe cases. You plug the coil in. It's about 15" in diameter. Move it around the screen and back off slowly before turning it off.

On the contrary: 'newer' TVs (plasma and LCD) don't need degaussing! Automatic degaussing has been incorporated in almost all colour CRT TVs since at least the 1970s.

But there may be a trick required to get it to work for you. Normally the automatic degausser does its job when power is first switched on. But if you leave your TV switched on at the mains and turn it on and off only with the remote control (in which case it goes to 'standby', not truly 'off'), the degausser may not be energised.

Switch off (or unplug) the TV at the mains outlet, and leave it off for 5 minutes at least (this is to allow the thermistor that controls [decreases] the degaussing current, to cool down). Then turn it on/plug in at the mains, and turn it on with the remote again (it may now take a minute or so before a picture appears, since it wasn't in 'standby').

This should ensure the tube is degaussed. If that doesn't fix the problem, you'll need to call a serviceman for manual degaussing (which should be done in your house, since the result is sensitive to the earth's magnetic field).

    Hi,
I had some kids over to play with my kids and someone placed a magnet on the TV screen causing this same discoloration. I called a repair man who said if you turn it off and unplug the TV for 24 -48 hours it can allow the color to "reset" or whatever he called it. It worked for us and the discoloration had been pretty bad, so hopefull it will work for you. Hope that helps!
