Can a wife who was abandoned deposit a husbands check into someone else's account?

If the cheque is in his name only, you can't co-sign it to deposit it. Even if you managed to do it, the bank where you deposited the cheque would not accept it anyway.

You really need to flesh this out.

If the woman was abandoned (by whom), (why) how did she get his check

Whose checking account did she deposit into? Did the check come in the mail?

Has the maker of the check been notified and can they stop payment on the check?

Have the police been called?

Well, donf, you certainly had a different take on it then I did. I was looking from the female perspective as maybe the poster is the wife. Maybe not. We shall see.

Generally if you are man and wife and have a joint bank account you won't have to have the man sign it. You can put it in. But, as long as you have a deposit slip for the other account chances are that if you tell them he's your husband then they will let you deposit it no matter who's account it is. Chances are that is. I've done it before. It wasn't illegal though because I had my husband's consent. The problem would really be with withdrawing money.

All that is required is for you to write in the endorsement section, "For deposit only." The signature is not required.

However, the you do need a checking account to do this.

What you cannot do is deposit the check into some one else's account without an endorsement of the person to whom the check is made out to.

Of course, that does not apply to my wife because for almost my entire 24 years with IBM, she took my (our) check, signed it and did whatever she needed to do with it. That's how I avoided paying a single bill since I joined her in marriage.

At Canadian banks, the person the cheque is made out to is the only person who can endorse it and deposit it. I don't know how they know when you use an ATM, but double endorsed cheques are not acceptable anymore either.

With my ex wife I never signed my own check in 10 years, I handed her a check, she would sign my name and take it to the bank

They check closer on cash back, but often for deposits, they just deposit the check
