My computer is not reading my ethernet card/jack
Hi, I don't know where else to turn and everyone here is so helpful. I hope someone can help me because I'm very frustrated right now:mad:. I have window me. I know it is very old:). I have an ethernet card/jack(what ever you call it) on the back of my tower but my computer is not reading it. I bought a wirelss router so I can use my wii to access the internet I also have it plugged up to my interent. I found out I need the pass phrase, ssid and type of security for the router to work. The tech help told me my computer is not reading my ethernet. So I went to control panel, systems, device manager . I see my ethernet listed under other devices with a question mark and then exclamation mark. I know in the pass I was able to use the ethernet. Someone installed it on my compter. I had to restore my computer at one time. I'm assuming that's when I lost ethernet control. Is there any way I can get it to work? I would greatly appreciate it!

    Thank you!

Try reloading the drivers for the ethernet card and see if that helps. You will need your original OP cd's for this if you can't get on the internet to download the drivers.

One thing you might want to try is getting a different wireless router and see if that helps. From what I understood, when you plug the ethernet straight from your cable/dsl modem into the computer, it works? This means the ethernet port is OK, it just has a problem with that router or to be more exact, the way the router is communicating with your computer. Routers vary greatly and from my experience often work somewhat unpredictably with various computers. What brand is your router? Make sure it is a good brand, wireless routers is not something where you want to go for an off brand, I have made that mistake several times. So, if possible, try to get a different brand, like Linksys or Netgear, see if that helps.

Of course, I am sure you already know this, but you should really upgrade your computer to xp if possible, but that's another story.

If yo have a mark next to device in device mgr, right click on it and choose uninstall and say OK.

-now close all open windows and restart the PC

On restart, windows will attempt to install the ethernet driver

Once back in windows check device mgr again to see if unknown device comes back

If so, download and install Unknown Device Identifier
Unknown Device Identifier - Freeware Download

This will search PC and come up with list of unknown devices it finds - when it find it, it should give you a site to download an appropriate driver

Go from there - Post Back

Nothing happens when you click on the program? Have never had problem with that one.

What you can do is go to
DriverGuide.com (printer drivers, cdrom drivers, modem drivers, sound drivers, mouse drivers, monitor drivers, etc.) - DriverGuide.com and sign up for free account and then there, you can have the site check your system for outdated drivers and download from that site also, worth a shot, a very good site
