    Background Checks
    I am looking for a job abd most require a background check what I s zero tolerance and if you have a background and it is non violent then what do you do?

    You write down the truth or else the truth is discovered and you are not hired OR, even worse, at some point the truth is discovered after you've been hired, you get fired, you can't collect unemployment.

    I do background checks and more and more often the question is, "Have you ever been arrested?"

    Can you please put "zero tolerance" in the context of the job(s) you are looking at, a paragraph from the application materials would be very helpful.

    Zero Tolerance in my job means for on the job stuff. For example: you beat up your boss or throw something at a co-worker; you can kiss your job goodbye.

    Whatever you do DON'T LIE about anything they find in a background check and question you about. That establishes for an employer that not only do you have a record you are a liar. Many employers are willing to accept mistakes made in the past as long as they see you being honest with them when they ask you questions.

    Well, I hate to say it but you should write down the truth. But something you might want to look up is your state statue of limitations. That basically will explan how long it is until you don't have to write it down anymore. I live in MI mine is 7 years as long as it's not murder or rape, and even though they may find that you have the record after that state's statue of limitations they won't use it against you, not that they shouldn't but they won't.

    Again, you have to be totally honest because depending on the type and extent of background check it WILL appear - particularly if it's a job that requires bonding or insurance.

    I have never seen any law that indicates there's a statute of limitations for reporting arrests/sentences on job applications - there is a statute, of course, for filing charges but not for reporting arrests. Many applications say "within the past 5 years" (or whatever they care about) but I am aware of no such law.

    If you have something to the contrary, please correct me.
