I just heard the company I work for is closing next month?
    Hello,

I am not sure what to do?? I just heard that the small business I work for will be closing next month? Can anyone advise about what my next steps should be? I started looking for new employment yesterday but not much out there. Is there anyway to get paperwork going for Unemployment Prior to being laid off?

    Thanks!

You cannot file for unemployment ahead of time. Plus there is a one week waiting period once you are laid off that you don't collect any benefits. Figure at least 3 weeks from the time you file until you collect your first check. The best way to ensure prompt payment of benefits is by direct deposit into your checking account. Then you know that the money is there versus floating around in the mail somewhere. Also, if you opt for direct deposit you are able to file your weekly claim online and get paid weekly as well. Once you are officially laid off call them up and start your claim.
