Howcan I legally use a picture of President Elect Obama to make custom gifts for sale
I make custom gifts in glass, metal, etc. I purchased legal transfers for textile printing, etc.
However, I make custom gifts such as découpage plates, glass trinkets, buttons, journals, key chains etc and I want to place the photo of the First Family on these items. I have seen many photos in magazines, newspapers, etc. that I like, and I could cut away the background, etc and just use the rest of the photo if that is OK.

Usually, in making personalized gifts, one scans a photo and processes the photo as needed in order to make the item. What can I do? I don't want to violate any copyright laws in making these unique items. And, I have not been able to find a source that sells sublimation transfers of the First FAmily. Sublimation transfers are needed for coffee mugs, etc. The buttons and glass trinkets do not require a transfer as such. I just need to print out on my printers, and process them for making the items.

Please note that I have legally purchased images for textile imprinting by transfers.

Desperate. Time is running out for preparation.

Legally you have to contact his press office and get permission and/or buy the rights to do so.

Actually, I read this recently, but don't recall where, that by running for public office, Obama (or any politico) puts their image in the public domain. So you can legally use HIS image. I don't believe this applies to the first family though.

However, you can't just take photos out of publications. The publication may hold the copyright and you would need permission from the publication.
