Does my baby's due date start from my last period or when the unprotected sex happen?
Hiya, I'm new to this but just a quick qestion. Now today (17th Nov 08) I had unprotected sex with my partner as were trying for a baby. I think its been about 2 weeks since my last period. Now I'm trying to work out my due date but one website is asking me what is the last date of my period. Now I've just had sex, so shouldn't my due date start from now, why would it start from 2 weeks ago which is my last period, really confusing but really would help if someone new. Do I start the 40 week countdown from today (if i am pregnant) or from my last period?

    Many Thanks

    Sam x

Your "count down" starts from the first day of your last period.
There is a gestational date and conception date. The gestational date is the date of your last period. Conception date is the date the baby is made.
When calculating due dates they go by the gestational date.

First of all, you don't know if you are pregnant yet. So, don't put the cart before the horse.

Secondly, trying so hard and trying to get dates the day you have sex will only stress your body and make conceiving more difficult.

As of this moment, you don't have a due date as you don't even know if you are pregnant yet. Keep track of your periods on a calendar. The day you start and the day you stop. This will help make calculations easier.

First off, J_9 - What's WITH the "don't put the cart before the horse" yer if you was talking to some silly little girl who only wants babies and hasn't grown up then yer say that, but I've been with my partner for 6 years, we have two children, the only 2 times in 6 years we slept togther without protection I got pregnant so yes it's that easy for me, so I might aswel say I'm pregnant, I know its different every time but come on! My last child was 2 years ago so I can't remember when they calculated it.

And also J_9 why would I be stressing about my due date, I askd a simple question and got a SIMPLE answer from "Now What" so why did you feel you needed to answer aswel!

    Thanks "Now What"

Chill out Sam!! I was only stating that you cannot guess your due date until you know for sure if you are pregnant. Now, we cannot even begin to guess if you are pregnant yet. You see it takes approximately 3 days for the sperm to reach the egg once ejaculation happens. Then anything can happen between the vaginal vault and the fallopian tube where the egg is fertilized.

What I meant by "don't put the cart before the horse" is that when people try so hard to become pregnant, certain hormones are released making it even harder to get pregnant. With you already trying to determine due dates out you are placing a stress on your body that you cannot detect, this in turn makes conception harder yet again. That is just another strike against pregnancy.

While you may not feel stressed, your body does detect the fact that you are purposefully trying. The best thing to do is to just relax and let the period be late, or let it come. I know it's hard, but it is what is necessary when trying to conceive.

Haven't you ever heard of the doctors telling patients who are having trouble getting pregnant to just "take a vacation" and voilą they are pregnant? This also happens with teens who get pregnant the first time they have sex. It's simply because they AREN'T trying. As an OB nurse I can tell you that unplanned pregnancies are much more common than planned pregnancies.
