Hi,

I have a leak at a PVC joint in the branch drain line coming from my kitchen sink that runs directly into the sewer line. I’ll try to explain the location of the leak. The sewer line runs with a slight slope along the top of my basement. At the approx. location of my kitchen sink (floor above), there is a Y-fitting with a 45 degree elbow coming off the sewer line. Following the 45 degree elbow is a very short piece of PVC (approx. 1” in length) followed by a 45 degree bend. The leak is right at the top of this 45 degree bend. Following the 45 degree bend, there is another short piece (approx. 5”) of PVC running directly vertical. I’m not sure if there is any way of fixing this leak without replacing part of the sewer line. Also, I’m pretty sure the plastic pipe is ABS and not PVC (it’s been painted over, but where the paint has peeled off, it is black). Are there any issues with attaching new PVC piping to existing ABS pipes?

Hey Carlo,
If this were my leak I wouls clean all the paint from around the leaky joint. I would purchase small cans of ABS Primer and Cement. I would dry the area and prime it. Them I would slather ABS Cement glue around the leaks area. Let it cure for 1/2 hour and go back and do it again. Let it cure oiver night. That's much easier then to commingle PVC and ABS. If you're going to replace then use ABS pipe. Good luck, Tom
