refrigerator trips GFI as soon as it's plugged in
I have a maytag refrigerator model# MZD2752GRW. About a two months ago it randomly tripped one of my outlets GFI. After a reset it worked until this morning. Now it trips no matter what side of the house I plug it into (seperate circuits to eliminate house wiring). I'm looking for a wiring diagram for this model but does anybody have any preliminary ideas?

Does it trip immedately when you plug it in?
Look for problems in the cord or where it connects.
Turn control to off and see if there is a change.
If not immedatlely:
When door is opened?
Look for short in wiring to light.
When compressor starts?
Look at motor wiring, temp control wiring.
One or twice a day, after runring?
Look at wiring to defrost timer motor and heater.
Look for moisture in all electrical controls.
Just some thoughts.

Thanks for your reply. It does trip immediately however after about 40 min. I plugged it back in and it didn't trip again. Is there a compressor/motor in the fridge that could be going bad?

So I just re-read your answer and saw it has a motor. Could that be going bad to cause a failure when it gets too hot? I cleaned everything the best I could on the backside and opened it up at the bottom and cleaned there too. I was unable to reach where the main harness actually went inside of the paneling.

The compressor could be aging or the fans on the fridge. The refrigerator is not required to be on GFCI if the outlet is strictly for the appliance. Are there other outlets on this same GFCI receptacle?

Don't put refrigerators on GFI's. They may trip.

Thanks for the replies. It wasn't on a GFI, but that side of the kitchen had GFI's on it and they were in series with the fridge, so it tripped. We installed non GFI's on that entire side.
Thanks again.
