Hole in floor is larger than closet flange, and the flange may be too low
We recently put down ceramic tile in one of our bathrooms. A friend of ours did the job for almost nothing, as he had most of the required supplies left over from another job, including tile. Now there is water leaking from the base of the toilet.
After scouring the DIY sites on the internet, I think I have two problems, and am not sure what to do. When we were re-installing the toilet after putting down the tile, I don't recall us using any type of extension to account for the thickness of the new floor. I also noticed that the hole in the floor is larger than the size of the flange, and there doesn't seem to be anything supporting the flange. I've seen the flange extensions for the first problem, and some type of flange support bracket for the second, but I'm not quite sure how to combine these to solve my problem. Or is there another way? |

OK! The extension problem can b e corrected with a set of flange extensions. Now tell me about this "flange support bracket" that you speak of.
I was going to ask what material the floor's made of so I could see if you could get under it and scab the opening up but if you have a better way I want to hear about it. Regards, Tom |

The flange support I mentioned can be seen here SIOUX CHIEF 490-11322 Closet Flange Floor Support Our house is not built on a slab, it is up off the ground. The flooring is just a layer of plywood, followed by that cement backer board, and 12 in ceramic tiles. From what I've read in several DIY articles, I thought that the flange should be resting on top of the tile, not just hanging in a hole in the floor. |

No, flanges are series of pancake-like rings. They used to sell them in packages of 5 rings for about $10.00. Nowadays, you have to buy them separately, by piece. Each of them will run you about $3.00. You install as many of them as you need. Put bead of caulk between each ring. Once you are even with the finished floor, install wax ring and toilet. Don't forget to buy 3 1/2" "remodeling toilet ring brass bolts". Existing bolts may be too short... |
