    Department of Peace
    Do you think with a possible Obama Presidency and a possible Democrat fillibuster/veto proof majority in Congress ,that the cabinet level Dennis Kucinich initiative 'Dept of Peace ' will be passed and signed into law ?
    GovTrack: H.R. 808: Text of Legislation, Introduced in House

    The Peace Alliance - Campaign for a Department of Peace - Home Page

    The Kucinich proposal is actually not a new-age peace-nik idea. One of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence ,Benjamin Rush ,proposed the establishment of a “Peace Office” which was to be on equal footing with the “War Office”.
    Essays, Literary, Moral and ... - Google Book Search

    Some of the Department authority will be “to develop policies to address violence against animals” and “develop new approaches for dealing with the implements of violence, including gun-related violence and the overwhelming presence of handguns.

    When Obama spoke of a civilian organization equal in power to the military I think this is what he had in mind.

    I think every non-military dept in our overbloated government is involved in "peace" . We do not need the redundency. I would further argue that to a large extent the US military is involved in "peace" actvity.

    That is debatable.

    Wouldn't this be a violation of separation of church and state?

    In General- The Secretary shall--

    (1) work proactively and interactively with each branch of the Federal Government on all policy matters relating to conditions of peace;

    (2) serve as a delegate to the National Security Council;

    (3) call on the intellectual and spiritual wealth of the people of the United States and seek participation in its administration and in its development of policy from private, public, and nongovernmental organizations
    Kucinich is calling for religion in government? Nah, I'm sure he meant more like his wife's "spirituality," he probably thinks she'd be a good first secretary.

    Hello tom:

    I don't know about specifics, but an Obama presidency will take this country in a NEW direction... Ifin he needs a new department to get him there, then that's cool with me...

    PS> I don't know what yer so pissed off about. If the policies YOU supported, and the dufus DID, were worth a crap, we wouldn't be taking this NEW direction... What?? Yer still going to yell the neocon stuff, even though it's been TOTALLY repudiated by your fellow Americans??

    Steve ;The $845 billion Obama plans to transfer to the UN will buy lots of peace.

    Maybe because Obama wants the UN to have more power than it does now? Maybe you remember the Korean war when we fought under UN auspices. We wound up with a COSTLY stalemate because everything had to go through the UN instead of being overseen by US military. Obama wants to give the UN more money. For what??

    When Obama spoke of a civilian organization equal in power to the military I think this is what he had in mind.

    We, that is you and I as the average citizens, are not that well organized, equipped, or schooled enough in general comprehensive knowledge of the law to be deputized (so to speak) 24/7. The public involvement would be for smaller assignments and tasks. And besides we would still be trumped by local government. Unless we are under a martial law we will continue to be served by civil law enforcement. Anything on a grander scale more than likely would be joined by our military services, National Guard, State Guard, etc... Police officers in actuality are supposed to serve the public and are peace officers. As for the question of having enough Democrats seats replacing the Republicans, I do think it is highly possible. In fact, the Pub party is starting ads in selected states, just trying to neutralize the likelihood of a Democrat presidency. Basically the Pubs are seeing the writing on the wall and are appealing to Independents to vote based on checks and balances. Of course, with the public disdain for Dubya, I don't know how effective that strategy will be. Personally I think the Republicans are too late for damage control measures. But we'll just have to wait and see.

    Not a darn thing, NK, but Indian UN Peacekeepers have everything to do with my last post. Are you going to answer my question or not? What would you call raping the population under their protection, initiating or reacting?
