    BX Cable
    BX Cable has no ground wire in it. Can the cable itself be used as a ground?

    ONLY if it is actual AC cable with the thin aluminum bond strip running inside.

    This is NOT a ground, it is a bond. It ensures continuity along the sheathing and is just folded back over the cable when terminating.

    Here's an option... Another type of armored cable, MC cable has the armor wound in such a way that the armor is considered an Equipment Grounding Conductor. NEC article250.118 (10) says it's OK if it's listed and identified for that use. Just in case that's what you had in mind.

    Hedlok, what you are describing is AC cable, and the armor is only acceptable as a ground is the bond strip is present as I mentioned.

    What you are talking about, MC cable, has a dedicated insulated green ground the same size as the circuit conductors.
    The cables described in 250.118(10) are a) MC cable and b) HCF MC cable.

    HCF is "health care facility" MC cable where the sheath alone is a grounding conductors along with the green ground. This cable satisfies the redundant grounding requirements for health care facilities.
