I have an 11 year old 2 story house with basement.

My basement floor drain has recently been backing up. The first time there was a lot of green pipe slime. I have a 20 foot snake that I used with out much resistance. I put in some heavy duty draino gel and then flushed with the drain from hot water heater and the drain worked well. I went upstairs and put the rest into the laundry sink, this morning it drained well. Later after there was a large puddle on the floor around the drain. It smelled like the draino product, but so green stuff. No resistance from auger, but my neighbors 1/2 inch tape is now stuck in the trap and I can't get the tape out.

Recently put in a front opening new washing machine that has a high speed spin

2 questions

1 how do I get my neighbors tape out? Pull harder (bigger hammer)

2 Do I need to have washer drain in to laundry sink rather than a direct hook to the drain?

Newer washers can sometimes over power a 2" or smaller drain line. The 2009 code will require that pipe to be 3". Once you get your neighbors snake out you should try with a longer 1/4" rod. Not much choice with a stuck snake but to turn counterclockwise while you pull with all your might.
