    Something's wrong...
First time posting... hope someone can help me. I'm 8 months pregnant and about to lose my mind!

Installed a 3-speed ceiling fan and no matter how many times I pull the cord and wait, the speed stays the same---ridiculously high. Any idea on what I did wrong? Would it be something electrical? There's also a master switch on the wall, if that helps.

    Thanks in advance...

Was it a brand new fan? If so, are you sure you're pulling the right cord?

Lastly, when you say "master switch", you mean an "on/off" switch or a switch designed to control speeds?

Brand new---deep, deep discount. I've never heard of the brand name... SML?

I think I may have figured out the problem. On the base (if that's what you call it), there are two cords. One says 'on/off' and the other isn't marked-but one can only assume that it's for the speed. There's also a forward/reverse switch which is in the forward position.

With the master switch (my made up name for the wall switch normally used to control the previous overhead light) in the up/on position, I've been yanking on the unmarked cord assuming that it's for the speed. Well, after playing with both of them, apparently, it isn't. The 'on/off' cord is actually the one that's controlling the speed. I'm going to make the broad assumption that they are just mismarked because I didn't have to do any setup with that area of the fan.

Thanks for the quick reply, though... and for having so much useful information on your website.

SMC I assume is the brand of the fan. And yes it is possible the cords are mismarked.

Let me know if it works.

All is good in the nursery now. The cords were, in fact, mismarked.

    Thanks for your help.
