    Determining chemical formulas using molar mass
    A 0.158 gram sample of the salt, comprised of Barium and one of the halide ions, was dissolved in water, and an excess of sulfuric acid was added to form barium sulfate After filtering and drying, the solid BaSO_4_ weighed 0.124 frams. Determine the chemical formula of the barium halide salt and identity of the halide.
    :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: :confused:
    Could someone at least show me where to start? I don't even know what I am looking for?

    Write an equation first!! Chemistry is best explained through equations, remember that.

    What is the valency of halides? The valency of Barium is 2. So, you may form a formula for the barium halide. You say: let X be the halide, so the formula of the barium halide will be?

    This is like a displacement reaction. Barium will form the sulphate, which is an insoluble salt. Work out the number of moles of BaSO4, this will be equal to the number of moles of the barium halide.

    Then you say: If xxx moles of barium halide =0.158g, then one mole will be...

    Then, remove the mass of barium. You have the mass of the halide which, by reference to the periodic table will give you its identity.

    Hope it helped! Rate my answer if you don't mind.:)
