    Credit damaged by illegitimate collections
Ok, so I bought a snowmobile and the financing was set up with GE financing. I paid this off (or so I thought) in MAY. I just checked my credit report and it has my balance at $156 dollars, over 60 days overdue. I am pissed. I value my credit and it is important to me in my business. I was quite sure I had paid in full (why would I pay off 7500 to leave 150?), and I never received any notification of this! They may have had an obselete address, but still no phone call. I will be contacting the company tomorrow, and I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of recourse I might have against this company? I'm happy to pay the 156 dollars (though I'm not sure I owe it) but I want my credit reports restored!! No adverse acounts. Does anyone know if this is possible/ what I can do?

Well of course what you "should" have done was send a letter with the last payment and call them a week after that for a statement of paid.

If you had not given them a current address, I would ask why, but if they had a old address if they sent bills there, there is little you can do.

But you can ask for things to be cleared up,

I had a Sears card when I was in college. They reported it on my credit report in 1998. They sold off the debt to another company in 2004. This company reported the debt at this time. This extended the time it was to drop off my report. Now instead of falling off, it won't go off till 2011....
